In the context of the global economy facing many fluctuations, Vietnam's agricultural, forestry and fishery export industry is still striving to maintain growth momentum and seek new opportunities. Despite certain difficulties, Vietnam's key products are still competitive in the international market. However, challenges still exist, especially in the context of export value tending to decrease in early 2025.
Export growth and challenges from the international market
According to information from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), although the export value of agricultural, forestry and fishery products in January 2025 decreased by about 4.9% compared to the same period in 2024, the agricultural sector still maintained a stable growth rate in the production of key products such as rice, aquatic products, wood and forestry products. Specifically, the harvested rice area increased by 80%, livestock such as pigs and poultry also recorded a good growth rate from 1.7% to 3.7%. In addition, the output of exploited wood in the first month of 2025 also increased by more than 8%.
The solution of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is to take advantage of existing trade relationships and seek new markets to compensate for the decline from traditional markets. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has directed enterprises to promote exports to Halal markets, while encouraging enterprises to export to other potential markets such as the United States and China.
Key commodities and price issues
Looking at the structure of export commodities, it is clear that some commodities have increased in output but decreased in price. Typically, rice exports, although in 2024 the average rice export price reached 627 USD/ton, an increase of 9.1% compared to 2023, in the first month of 2025, the rice export price dropped sharply to about 440 USD/ton. This is mainly due to factors from the international market such as the reopening of India and the fact that many countries have achieved self-sufficiency in food supply.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has been implementing measures to restore rice export prices, while seeking new export markets, including participating in Halal markets in Muslim countries, where demand for high-quality, safe food is increasing sharply.
Opportunities from new markets and sustainable strategies
One of the important markets that Vietnam is promoting exports to is the United States, where there is high demand for Vietnamese agricultural products. However, Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien said that the US President has signed an executive order imposing tariffs on goods from countries such as Canada, Mexico, and China. This is expected to cause difficulties and challenges when there may be trade confrontations between the United States and some other countries. However, Deputy Minister Tien also emphasized that Vietnam and the United States have maintained a very good comprehensive strategic partnership, and this will be a solid foundation for Vietnam to continue exporting agricultural products to this market.
In the context of fierce competition, Vietnam's agricultural sector is moving towards a sustainable development strategy, focusing on applying technology in production management, tracing product origin, and building raw material areas that meet international quality standards. Along with that, digital transformation in the agricultural sector will be an important factor to enhance transparency and efficiency in the supply chain.
